Muhammed Marasli

Chapter: Turkey

Role: Chairman

Where do you live? Istanbul, Turkey.

Work historyI have worked in the Facade Cladding industry for more than 35 years.

How long have you been involved in openBIM and buildingSMART

I’ve been involved in BIM since 2012, OpenBIM and BuildingSMART since 2017.

What do you like the most about your work in your chapter

A large number of people in Turkey, such as designers, engineers, material manufacturers and academics etc. are involved in BIM. What motivates me most about our work is to be able to form teams and work alongside experts from their own fields to succeed together.

The greatest success achieved within your chapter

To have gathered enthusiastic and motivated members which represent a broad group of the built environment industry stakeholders, covering both ends of the supply-enddemand-end, and all in-between.

To have started cooperating with the community and having formed a mirror committee together with the Turkish Standards Institution.

What does openBIM mean to you

Free flow of information among all parties, without having to think of how and focusing on what…

What is the biggest challenge the community is facing today

Lack of awareness and utilization of existing digital tools and workflows that promise better outcomes, along with access to basic information and best practices.

What challenges do you encounter in your country?

Lack of clear guidance on where to start, case studies and tools to support successful implementation.

What are the main opportunities for your market

There are several large public projects that have a lot to gain from adopting digital workflows and delivery in the long run. Leveraging the experience gained from high profiled international projects would be beneficial for the market.

Digitalization is more and more present today; what do you do in your chapter to meet the challenges it poses

As Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." This is my mantra and as a chapter we definitely have progress by meeting the challenges head on by organizing our working groups to address the needs to digitize our industry and promote our vision to all stakeholders in our industry.

What vision, as a chapter leader, would you give to the whole community

An industry transformed by openBIM which is focused on “what” to deliver rather than “how”.

What is your overall vision of the future

To bring our industry closer towards a common understanding in authoring and delivering information for better outcomes and better business.

Would you like to add something else

There is a lot of room and reason for change in the building industry and we can achieve it together. This is especially clear as society works to deal with a dangerous and contagious virus, which has underlined the need for adopting emerging technology and digitizing workflows.
