Yinquan Yu

Chapter: China Chapter

Role: Chairman

Where do you live? BeijingChina

Work historyI have been working in the construction industry since 1984.

How long have you been involved in openBIM and buildingSMART

buildingSMART China Chapter has been officially established in 2013, China Institute of Building Standard Design and Research (CBS) is the undertaking body of China Chapter. As the vice-president of CBS, I was elected as the chairman of bSC in 2013 and started to learn about bSI and openBIM.

What do you like the most about your work in your chapter

Through the platform of China Chapter, we are able to explore BIM standards and practices with experts from the AECO industry and establish good communication relationship with experts from all over the world.

The greatest success achieved within your chapter

The influence of bSI and openBIM help us uniting the strengths of all parties in the industry, including the government, owners, designers, construction parties, operation and maintenance parties, etc.to form an industry consensus on BIM. And relevant key points of openBIM standards were summarized into China national BIM standards. Besides, China Chapter has organized companies from construction, municipal, railway, highway, port, aviation, water conservancy, oil pipeline, power, telecommunications, manufacturing, research institutions, software industry and jointly carried out a city-level data integration research, which laid a certain foundation for the development of city information modelling.

What does openBIM mean to you

Industry data sharing and a basic agreement for standardized digital twin.

What is the biggest challenge the community is facing today

Firstly, we are facing challenges from design traditions and habits. The design methods and procedures of each country and region are very different, so the level of digital development and data sharing are also different. Secondly, due to the advent of the big data era, we will face the data ownership and data security issues, which will require openBIM to fully consider the needs of more complex construction practices on the basis of data sharing. Thirdly, we are also facing the language problems.

What challenges do you encounter in your country

Due to the vast market in China, there are many theories and technical concepts in the BIM field, and some technical concepts direct data to be closed rather than open. In addition, the traditional collaboration mode has not yet made the design and other production phase get enough benefits from the BIM implementation, so BIM has not been quickly popularized as many people thinkThe usability of software and the non-compliance between software and openBIM also aggravate this problem to some extent

What are the main opportunities for your market

BIM is moving away from a pure tool and moving towards a technical model. This technology model has promoted the industry's digital transformation, while also spawning digital-centric industries such as digital twins.

Digitalization is more and more present today; what do you do in your chapter to meet the challenges it poses

We need to treat digitalization with a more open attitude, integrate BIM with GIS, IoT, big data, cloud computing and many other information technologies to form an interactive common force and promote smart cities and smart industries to gradually become reality. In order to achieve this, China Chapter is actively gathering strength from the field of information technology, conducting forward-looking researches, and exploring the prerequisites for technology integration.

What vision, as a chapter leader, would you give to the whole community

Use regional strength (like chapters, members) to identify regional differences and make openBIM more implementable.

What is your overall vision of the future

"Industrial digitalization" and "digital industrialization" will develop in parallel. Digital twins will play a vital role in the key decision-making of human sustainable development. At the same time, data will also become a basic resource element of a country.

Would you like to add something else

The broad development prospect means the right direction, so we have a clearer understanding that every small step taken is a contribution to human society.
