Outcomes of the Board, SAC, International Council and Chapter Conference 2023

London, U.K. – July 4, 2023 – The buildingSMART International Council, Board and Strategic Advisory Council meetings took place between 19-21 June with a variety of announcements  and news to be shared. This historic event heralded some major updates and changes, including the replacement of the long-serving Chairman, Patrick MacLeamy, after many years of service.

Overview

The event took place in Brdo, Slovenia, at the picturesque Brdo Congress Center. The Slovenia Chapter hosted the event with the support of 2DK, Bexel Consulting, CGS Labs, DRI, iC ELEA, and ZAG as sponsors. There was a very strong attendance for a Council meeting with over 70 participants from across the globe. Attendees came from Chapters, prospective new Chapters, Board members, Strategic Advisory Council representatives, guests, and bSI and buildingSMART Slovenian staff. It was also offered as a hybrid event with some Chapters attending online

International Council

The buildingSMART International Council was attended by Full and Developing Chapters, Chapters In Formation, guests, the Board, and bSI management office staff.

Council 3

The meeting included corporate updates from the management office, governance updates, financial updates, voting procedures for the Annual Report, Board Nominations, and presentations on other topics. 17 of the 17 Full Chapters voted with the results found below:

  1. Annual Report for 2022 – approved.
  2. Approval for Board changes. Kjell Inge Davik and Patrick MacLeamy have stood down as Board Members, being replaced by Christina Hvid and Ian Howell – approved.
  3. Ian Howell has replaced Patrick MacLeamy as Chairman – approved.
  4. The re-appointment of Jøns Sjøgren, Patrick MacLeamy, Birgitta Schock, Menno de Jonge as the Nominations Committee for 2023-2024 – approved.
  5. The Behaviour Code of Conduct has been updated – approved.
  6. Statement of support for IFC 4.3 endorsement and adoption as part of the ISO process – approved.
  7. The bSI Purpose was updated – approved.

Celebration

An evening celebration, speeches, and music took place on the evening of the 20th with the entire Board, Strategic Advisory Council, Chapters and guests at the Brdo estate in honour of Patrick's achievements. Patrick MacLeamy has been an instrumental figure in the development and growth of bSI since its inception and provided steady leadership. Over the last few years, his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment have propelled the organization to the forefront of the global building and infrastructure industry. Rasso Steinmann (Deputy Chair) provided music "from around the world" and various speakers came forward to share personal stories and inspirational moments about how Patrick had made a significant impact at buildingSMART. Patrick was gifted a book titled "The buildingSMART Journey" with pictures and captions from the beginning.

Board

The Board meeting included applications for two Chapter submissions, Brazil and India. Brazil submitted for Chapter-in-formation status, and India submitted to become a Developing Chapter. Both of these were approved by the Board. This was also the final meeting for Board members Kjell Inge Davik and Patrick MacLeamy. There was approval for further developments in bSI’s strategy and "Ways of Working".

Strategic Advisory Council (SAC)

As part of bSI’s Strategic Membership, the "SAC" meets twice a year to discuss the future direction of the community. Representations from Arup, Autodesk, China Communications Construction Company Ltd., China Railway BIM Alliance, Nemetschek Group, Oracle Construction and Engineering, Schneider Electric, Siemens, and Trimble all provided input, feedback, and discussion on topics such as software certification, IFC 4.3 update, and an interactive working session titled "Plate Spinning" which was driven by the SAC and aimed to prioritise the various work items at bSI. There was also a discussion around thought leadership and how bSI can best drive this global agenda.

buildingSMART International is a vendor-neutral and not for profit body that leads the development of open digital information flows across the built asset industry. Its mission is to proactively support industry participants who want to develop open standards for planning, design, procurement, assembly and operation of buildings and infrastructure worldwide. It provides the international network plus the necessary technical and process support. Its members, who range from across the built environment spectrum, collaborate under the buildingSMART organization. buildingSMART is engaged with other international standards bodies such as ISO, the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Its core Industry Foundation Class (IFC) standards achieved ISO approval in 2012.
