Digitizing construction for better product exchange, identification, and transparency

London, U.K. – 7th December 2021  buildingSMART International announces a joint white paper titled “Digitizing construction for better product exchange, identification, and transparency” that directly addresses the opportunities through use cases through the mutual industry bodies of GS1 and bSI.

The opportunity to align standards and technologies will provide huge benefits throughout the whole lifecycle of the construction industry. For example, when applied to Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) would provide real opportunities to better understand information and products inside a building or facility and further accelerate the digitization of the construction industry.

Aidan Mercer, Marketing Director, buildingSMART International said “This paper is the culmination of a few years of work with our partners GS1. The opportunity to make the world more sustainable is something we must collectively address, and I believe this paper has some clear direction on how we can identify use-cases and apply them through our large body of knowledge”.

“Sustainable construction is the true driver today, sometimes expressed as climate declared buildings in terms of CO2-footprint and circular economy in construction just to name a few. We believe the combination of bSI’s and GS1’s standards can address the challenges and look forward to working with the industry in producing use cases and ultimately real value and efficiency” says David Almroth, Global Lead for the GS1 Construction Center of Excellence.
